An interesting drive to explore, is to the town of Square Butte located midway between Stanford and Fort Benton on scenic Highway 80. Established in 1913, Square Butte was named for the flat-topped butte, (a laccolith, formed millions of years ago), looming over the community. With its soaring buttresses, spires, and pinnacles it is a compelling and imposing site.
On the west end of town is the Square Butte Jail, built in 1915 as a holding cell meant to deter local cowhands from Saturday night mischief.
Six miles away in the small town of Geraldine you can also check out another landmark, the Geraldine Milwaukee Depot, also listed in the National Register of Historic Places because of its architecture and its historical significance as one of the last Milwaukee Road depots along the North Montana Line.
