In the shadow of the Rocky Mountain Front, Choteau feels like a “Hallmark town”—a place where children ride bikes freely and neighbors look you in the eye. At the center of this welcoming atmosphere is Country Hallmark, a shop Mickey Hodgskiss has cultivated for thirty years with ranch-bred grit and “pretty practical” intuition.
Mickey’s journey began on her family’s ranch in Wolf Creek. While moving cattle, her father taught her to “watch the heads” and be observant. That ability to read a herd—spotting the one cow about to break—translated perfectly into retail. Today, Mickey uses that intuition to “read the room,” providing personal service big-box stores can’t replicate.
In 1996, Mickey and two close friends took a “fearless” leap to keep Hallmark in Choteau, and she became the sole owner in 2005. Remaining a “Non-Gold Crown” store gave her the freedom to ignore corporate floor plans and curate items that mirror Montana’s soul. From local Alpine Touch seasonings and huckleberry products to American-made Thompson’s candles, every item is selected for a community that values quality over trends.
The Hodgskiss legacy is rooted in the soil. While Mickey manages the shop, her family continues to innovate the agricultural side. Her husband, Bob, moved the family’s grain- cleaning business into town in the 90s, and today, their sons have taken the reins. Alongside Mickey’s daughter-in-law, Chrissy—with her expertise in handling the complex records and technology of modern farming—the next generation has grown the operation into a phenomenal success. Their dedication to soil-healing and no-till practices proves that modern agriculture requires both diversification and heart.
To Mickey, her shop is a ministry of presence. Inspired by Mother Teresa, she believes in “loving your own little sphere.” Whether it’s free gift wrapping or a bridal registry, she ensures every visitor feels like a neighbor. “Common sense is more important than a high IQ,” Mickey asserts.
Whether you are cruising down the Rocky Mountain Front or looking for a reason to hit the open road, make Choteau your destination. There is something soul-restoring about leaving the city lights behind for a town that feels like a step back in time.
Come experience the “Hallmark Town” for yourself—browse the unique Montana-made treasures, find that perfect “pretty practical” gift, and enjoy a warm conversation with Mickey. It’s worth the miles for the free gift wrap and a true dose of Big Sky hospitality!
