As an auctioneer, Shane Ophus has never been one to struggle with words—that is, until January 2025, when the Montana Auctioneers Association left him speechless. At this year’s annual convention, Shane was inducted into the Montana Auctioneer Hall of Fame.

“It’s pretty humbling and emotional when your peers recognize you,” says Shane, who has conducted auctions in the Treasure State for forty-four years. “The family made it a big secret. It was quite a surprise.”

In many ways, the Hall of Fame honor is an achievement for the whole Ophus family. Shane’s wife, Gwen, has been by his side since his very first auction and serves as head clerk and cashier for the Ophus Auction Company. Sons Taylor and Blaine work as auctioneers and ringmen, while Mason lends his talents as a clerk. Together, they have helped Shane cement Ophus Auction Company as “a business you can hang your hat on.”

“After forty-four years, you become an authority. People rely on your opinion to help them sell,” says Shane of what it means to become established in this industry. “The most important thing is you’ve got to be honest. You can lose your reputation in a second.”

As Shane looks back on the reputation he’s built, he also looks ahead to the future of Ophus Auction Company. “We’ve poured our blood, sweat, and tears into this company, and one thing that we’re really happy about is that one day, Blaine wants to take over the business,” he explains.

While Shane intends to start slowing down, he will never “call it quits.” He’s having too much fun doing what he loves.

“I’ve read the Bible front to back two times,” he says. “I never once read the word ‘retirement.’”
