USS Montana Crew Honors Tribal Heritage:

The crew of the USS Montana (SSN-794) exchanged the Pacific blue for the Big Sky, making a profound connection with the state’s true heritage during their recent tour. A highlight of their visit was their participation in the Little Shell Powwow, an experience that goes far beyond a typical public engagement.

By attending the powwow, the submariners honored the land and forged a respectful and necessary bridge with the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians. This engagement holds significant value for both sides. The Tribe, which achieved federal recognition in 2019 after 150 years of relentless advocacy, provides a powerful, real-world lesson in perseverance…a value that aligns perfectly with military fortitude.

This interaction fosters the mutual understanding and cultural awareness vital for the U.S. military’s global operations by learning core cultural teachings such as “kin relationality,” which emphasizes a deep interdependence with the natural world and a profound respect for elders as knowledge keepers.

For the Navy, engaging with Indigenous communities like the Little Shell is a vital step in honoring the complete heritage of the Treasure State. This connection extends past state symbols, allowing the “Vigilantes of the Deep” to truly embrace the vibrant history and resilience of Montana’s Indigenous peoples. It ensures that when they sail, they carry the spirit of all Montanans with them.

The Montana Naval Monument:

Tucked away in Veteran’s Memorial Park in historic Fort Benton, this memorial stands as a testament to the state’s deep connection to the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine. It’s a remarkable tribute in a place known as the “Birthplace of Montana” and the “world’s innermost port.”

The circular monument honors ships with ties to Montana, telling a powerful and surprising story of service and sacrifice. It’s a reminder that courage on the water is not defined by proximity to the ocean, and that Montana’s legacy extends far beyond its sweeping plains and rugged mountains.

It’s a quiet and contemplative spot, where you can reflect on the town’s rich history and honor the memory of those who have served. The Montana Naval Monument is a humbling reminder that Montana’s story—and its people—have reached far and wide.
