In the tight-knit community of Black Eagle, the sound of a siren signals the immediate and unwavering commitment of the Black Eagle Fire Department (Greater Eagle Fire Protection District). This dedicated team of first responders is a vital part of the community, answering a wide range of calls from fires and vehicle accidents to critical medical emergencies.
Beyond their emergency response, they are a beloved presence and host during community events like the annual 4th of July parade.
Despite their immense dedication, the department faces significant funding challenges. Their deep roots trace back to Black Eagle’s industrial origins, and the spirit of self-reliance remains strong, fueled by the knowledge that this volunteer department is essential.
The community has passionately rallied to build a new fire station. Some of the land was generously donated, and the rest was purchased from a local church. While the building’s construction showcases the department’s fiscal responsibility, they need funding or a donated lot to complete essential elements like the parking lot’s surfacing, paint, and bollard barriers for their new home.
The need for support also extends to their equipment. The cost of modern firefighting tools is staggering. According to Chief Doug Coster, a new fire truck alone can cost $300,000 without equipment, with gear adding another $100,000. While they recently purchased one new truck, much of their fleet is aging and in desperate need of replacement to ensure the safety of both firefighters and the community they serve.
The Black Eagle community is channeling its historic, resilient spirit into action:
- The Black Eagle Community Center is holding a gun raffle; every ticket purchased directly supports the department’s needs.
- The department is seeking assistance from anyone experienced in grant writing to help them secure crucial long- term funding. Please reach out to Chief Doug Coster directly.
- Your support helps ensure these brave men and women have the resources they need to continue their invaluable work. If you would like to make a direct monetary donation, please send it to: P.O. Box 533, Black Eagle, MT 59414.
