Located in Jefferson City, Tizer Botanic Garden & Arboretum features six acres of beautiful plant life. The business includes stunning gardens to explore, a diverse Garden Center, a beautiful wedding venue, and various festivals and educational activities throughout the year.
“The current business started as a hobby in 1998 and quickly turned into a small part-time business in the spring of 2000,” says owner Richard Krott. “Due to the vast collection of growing plants, we started to attract several thousands of visitors wanting to tour the gardens and arboretum. We then joined the American Public Gardens Association and became Montana’s only botanical garden and arboretum.”
In addition to being Montana’s only full-time operating botanical garden and arboretum, Tizer is one of only three internationally accredited arboreta in the U.S. that is privately owned. The arboretum is well-known for growing the largest collection of trees, shrubs, and perennials in the northern Rocky Mountain region (which includes more than 600 varieties of conifers).
Tizer is also a Test & Demo Garden for Colorado State University and the Denver Botanic Gardens’ Plant Select program for the past 15 years.
“In 2011 we were designated as the only All American Selections Demonstration Garden in Montana,” explains Krott. “AAS gardens, in all U.S. states and Canadian Provinces, grow and test the newly chosen plants of the year that are introduced throughout North America.”
Although many visitors come to Tizer to tour the beautiful gardens, many purchase plant life while they’re there. Tizer Botanic Garden & Arboretum sells more than 150 varieties of Montana native trees, shrubs, and perennials.
