Keeping an organization running in a little city can be difficult. You need people who are dedicated to the cause, and that’s exactly what you’ll find with the Wolf Point Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited.
“It’s like a huge family,” says past chapter president Sharon Karge. “You’re welcomed with open arms locally and with state Walleyes Unlimited.”
Karge has been with the organization for several years. She says that whether someone wants a fishing buddy or help with a project, there’s always someone around to make it happen, especially when it comes to supporting youth fishing.
The Wolf Point Chapter teaches area kids fishing safety, boat safety, and general fishing tips. Walleyes Unlimited members also take it upon themselves to get kids out on the water, sometimes for the first time in their lives.
“We want future generations to know how to fish appropriately and catch and release,” explains Karge. “It’s a teaching tool that they can use to teach the next generation.”
In addition to its support of local youth, the Wolf Point Chapter helps how it can with local waterway projects and community causes. Some of the organizations that the chapter helps support include the Lions Club, the 100 Club, the Optimists Club, Ducks Unlimited, and the Elk’s Lodge. Funds are raised at the Wolf Point Chapter’s annual banquet to help them in their various philanthropic efforts.
“The annual banquet on March 21 is our biggest fundraiser,” explains Karge. “It’s a fun, social evening.”
Karge says it takes more than the club to make the event successful; it takes the community. Local high school students and other volunteers help make the night a hit, and local support of the banquet allows the chapter to continue its mission of preserving Montana fishing traditions.
